Once Ibrahim and his followers had departed, Erik jabbed me in the shoulder. "Why did you do that? You don't think I can win—is that it?"
I took a moment to gather my thoughts before answering. "I think my chances of winning are better than yours."
"No! Abdul and I are better matched. We're closer in size and strength."
"Exactly! Abdul knows how to fight strength—speed and agility, I don't know."
Not saying a word, Erik pouted.
I felt a tug on my kaftan's sleeve. It was the crone. This time she looked me in the eyes. Apparently sticking my neck out for Erik had softened her opinion of me.
"Princes," she whispered, "before you leave I must inform you of the rumor floating about the palace. Listen carefully." Her voice dropped to a murmur. "A growing number of princes believe that the floating mist that killed your brothers is at the Sultan's service. They think that he's absorbing his dead sons' essence like some youth potions and that he will slowly kill you all."
I couldn't say I was surprised that my brothers thought our father guilty, but that they had dared say it aloud, that really surprised me.
"These are dangerous words to utter, my princes," the crone said. "Even when one thinks one's alone. In the palace, there is always someone taking note. My advice to you is to stay away from the ones who utter them. Please, don't mingle with those princes."
Erik and I exchanged looks of worry. "It's good advice, Amkel," Erik said. "Amir and I will try to follow it the best we can."
Smiling sadly at us, she bowed. "I wish you luck, good princes. We'll pray for your victory."
We thanked her and left. There was no time to waste; we had duels to attend.
